From 1998 to 2000, the KFA organized this prize-giving ceremony on behalf of the Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM). Since 1998 the nominated and award-winning short films (DKFP) have been touring through German cinemas. The film tour was organized and co-financed by the BKM based on a joint proposal by the Bundesverband kommunale Filmarbeit and the KFA. The KFA developed the concept for the tour and carried it out from 1998 to 2003. Since 2008 the short film association, AG Kurzfilm – Bundesverband deutscher Kurzfilm, has been in charge of organizing the tour in close cooperation with the KFA. Until 2011, the KFA was responsible for cinema bookings as well.

Since 2022, the KFA hosts again the award ceremony and organizes the most important and highest-endowed German award for short films in Hamburg.
